Before September 11th, 2001, most terrorist attacks received little media coverage because it was seen as an international event, obtained minimal U.S. government attention, and few Americans were ever involved. On September 11th, 2001, terrorists crashed four commercial airliners into important American structures causing over two-thousand mostly American civilian casualties. Thus, terrorism became an important domestic topic for the American public. Research on post-September 11th news coverage found that the news media became conduits for U.S. government officials, while excluding other viewpoints. Further research found the traditional news media carried a government positive theme through patriotic narratives. These findings caused some scholars to argue that the traditional news media failed to provide balanced and objective reporting.
