Abstract Spirit - Tragedy and Weeds. Full-length on Solitude Productions.
This Russian trio started in 2006 and have released two album thus far, "Tragedy and Weeds" being their newest release. They play a very dark and guitar driven form of Funeral Doom. A lot of the Funeral Doom I have encountered is very raw, almost to the brink of being slow Black Metal but Abstract Spirit's brand of Funeral Doom has a lot of different layers. The music is of course slow and droning, very monotoneous and repetitive, but there are a lot of different musical passages in each track. They are not just repeating a few riffs over and over again. The riffs are quite simple and raw, but very heavy and effective and from time to time they have a more melodic riff that adds another level of eeriness to the music. The music is also supported by keyboards, but the keyboards are more ambient ten musical, it adds a real ominous tone to the music. The atmosphere on this album is intense, dark and menacing, and very eerie and sombre. This is truly a harrowing experience. This album is a must for those of you that are into Funeral Doom. |
