Austere/Lyrinx - Only the Wind Remembers/Ending the Circle of Life. Split on Eerie Art Records.
This is a split containing two bands playing slow and depressive Black Metal. I'll start with Austere since that's how the CD starts. Austere is an Australian two man band that started in 2007 and have been quite prolific, they have thus far released one full-length album, two splits and one EP. They offer two tracks of slow and gloomy Black Metal. The tracks are slow and repetitive but they have a lot of acoustic guitar parts to break up the monotony before it gets boring. The riffs on their tracks are really great, perfect for this kind of music. They have a real sense of sadness and isolation, but there is also a melodic touch to many of them. They have intertwined the melancholic melodies and dissonant chords perfectly. There are several bands playing this type of music, this is definitely one of the better. Next up is British four-piece, they been around since 2004 and released one demo, one EP and two splits. Lyrinx like Austere also offers tow tracks of slow and sombre Black Metal. Raw and hate filled riffs repeated over and over again, creating and building a dark and desolate atmosphere. Tortured vocals proclaiming a nihilistic manifest. Then add some really interesting guitar work here and there and you get Lyrinx. This is a really good split with two bands that are at the top of their genre. |
