Nox Aurea - Via Gnosis. Full-length on Solitude Productions.
As far as I know this is the debut album from this Swedish band, they started in 2005 and now, four years later their first album is out. Nox Aurea contains members from such diverse acts as Domgård, The Cold Existence, Rimfrost and Cursed 13. "Via Gnosis" contains nine quite lengthy tracks (the longest being a bit over twelve and a half minutes long). Their music is a hybrid between Death Metal and Doom Metal, although maybe not the way you might expect. This is not some slow, morbid Death Metal offspring in the vein of Winter or Asphyx to some extent (although, the music is very slow and quite morbid. the music is more of an mixture of Death Metal and classical (some call it epic) Doom with a real flair for the melodic. There are hints towards the Gothic are, especially with the female vocals, the heavy keyboard layers (although the keyboard is not omnipresent) and I can hear a flute. But the emphasis lays on Doom, with a lot of Death Metal thrown in and an overall melodic feeling to it. I could mention three particular bands from the UK. But that would be too easy. Not bad, if you enjoy dark, melodic Death/Doom Nox Aurea is definitely for you. |
