V/A - Rising of Yog-Sothoth: Tribute to Thergothon. 2CD on Solitude Productions.
Thergothon, what can be said about this Finnish band that has not already been said? Truly one of the pioneers of Funeral Doom, a very influential band that have inspired many bands, and not just Funeral Doom bands. Look at what is going on in the current "Depressive" Black Metal scene, try do deny Thergothon's influence on many of those bands (although often not directly, but as an inspiration for their inspirations, which says a lot about those bands). Thergothon released two demos and one full-length, by many considered a classical album, it is an excellent album that deserves a lot more attention then it gets. I will not do a detailed review, since this is more for the fans of the band, and if you are a fan this is a must. There are some really excellent renditions where the band have made the songs their own, and still emained true to the original, mainly Khrom - "Everlasting", Evoken – "Yet the Watchers Guard", Worship – "Evoken", Umbra Nihil – "The Twilight Fade" and Nojda – "Evoken". Those are my favourite tracks, if you are a fan of Thergothon get this album. |
